Techniques That Allow for Hemp Plants to Produce Significantly Higher Quantities of CBD

With the global demand for CBD steadily increasing, new advances have been made in the breeding of hemp plants. Now there are techniques that allow for hemp plants to produce significantly higher quantities of CBD, allowing for the production of more CBD products. Hemp plants high in CBD are distinctly less dense than industrial hemp crops and so are more accessible to harvest. In the United States, hemp plants high in CBD are grown in approximately 1000-2000 plants per hectare plots.

On average, CBD concentration in hemp plants is 6-12%, but in certain strains, this concentration can go up to 18%. Hemp plants grow best when they are planted in airy soil which is not saturated with acid or water. The hemp plant is then sowed at cold temperatures. Once harvested, Hemp flowers must be dried before they can be used to extract the CBD. The majority of the CBD that is extracted from the plant takes an acidic form known commonly as CBDa. This form can be converted to non-acidic CBD using high-temperature light used during a process known as decarboxylation.

 

Methods that can be used hemp cultivation for CBD Oil

Many of these methods use organic solvents such as ethanol, or CBD can be extracted using gaseous methods such as CO2. Once the CBD oil has been extracted, it can be purified through multiple additional stages. If CBD is extracted using organic solvents, then it must be put through further testing to ensure the final product will not put the consumer at risk of dangerous side effects.

The CBD oil produced is also tested for microorganisms, pesticides, and heavy metals. Because the other cannabinoids tend to work together as part of an “entourage effect,” many consumers prefer to consume CBD extracts which use the whole plant or have a full spectrum of cannabinoids rather than products which use CBD purely.
